The story of the this instrument is then silent for nearly 2000 years until a burial place was dug up in Rome which contained a guitar like instrument. It was constructed totally of wood and had the same structure of modern day guitars.

From around the 5th to 16th century the guitar developed with a round bodied sound hole and a fat neck. History does not tell us whether this design was German or French.

Europe really become a hot spot for the guitar in the 17th and 18th centuries. A lot of the European aristocracy made it extremely popular and internationalized guitar playing and music. The 19th century saw a universal guitar adopted with the same basic tuning system we see today. Also in that century it moved out from Europe to America and the rest of the world.
During the 20th century it really became a household instrument. Playing the guitar is a past time that has spanned many hundreds of years, as well as various cultures. It is a brilliant, satisfying instrument to play and learn, with many understated characteristics.
