Learn How to Play the Guitar - By Following Your Passion

Why do people quit?

Too many times I have seen friends of mine starting to learn how to play the guitar, only to give up after a few months or so. Some of them because it was to hard and others claimed that they didn't have the spare time.

These are only poor excuses, I tell them. In my opinion they are doing it wrong. My way of learning, not only guitar playing but all sorts of learning, has always been the Way of Passion!

If you try to learn how to play the guitar starting with confusing blues scales or reading sheet music you are destined to bang your head against the wall. It simply doesn't make sense.

Ask yourself: "What exactly are my goals?" Why do you want to play guitar? I simply don't believe that it is to show off by playing the pentatonic scale in B Minor in 2 seconds flat.

So now you have decided what it is you want to accomplish. A qualified guess: you want to know enough so you can sit down with your friends and play some songs you like. Am I right?

So concentrate on that in the beginning. Learn how to play the guitar the way you see fit. The passionate way. Study only the things you need to learn to be able to follow your passion.

However - in the beginning there are a few "boring" things you no doubt have to learn, regardless of what I think:

*How to tune your guitar. Not so sexy, but very vital to your playing experience.

*How to string your guitar. If a string snaps, you need to know how to replace it. This is not very complicated, though.

*Reading chord charts. To be able to play a chord it's a good thing if you can read the chord chart.

None of those things are rocket science, though.

To become a good guitar player, there are of course a lot of other things you will need to learn. But I would take on those "challenges" when needed to. Let's say that you so much want to play Love of My Life, but you don't know how to play the fingerpicking style.

Now the choice are yours. Either you just strum it and play it the way you can. Or you learn how to play the guitar the way they do it on the record. You have created the passion. You are passionate about fingerpicking, and then, only then, you are in the right mindset to learn fingerpicking.
