So You Want to Learn to Play the Guitar

With the craze of Guitar Hero and other games, more and more people want to learn how to play the guitar for real, but where do you start? Do you take lessons, learn on your own, what is the right choice? Well, the first thing that you need to do is to make the commitment that you are going to learn the guitar. Decide right here and now that you will not be deterred form this goal. Learning to play the guitar will take some time and determination, but the payoff will pay for the rest of your life.

Now the first thing you need to do is find yourself a guitar, it doesn't have to be a new one or even an electric. Visit your local pawnshop and see what is in stock for an acoustic guitar. That way you can play anywhere and won't have to worry about getting an amp and cords. Also, if you learn how to play on and acoustic guitar, the transition to an electric will be much easier. Acoustic guitars have thicker strings and are a little more difficult to press, but this is good when you're learning. By playing on an acoustic, you will gain finger strength much faster and you can more easily hear if you're not holding down the strings correctly.

Next you will need to decide your method of learning. If you have the time and the extra money, you can get personal lessons, but for most this is not a viable option. Another option is to purchase guitar cord book, study the chords and then practice. The problem there is that you can't see anybody doing it and you have no way of knowing if you're strumming correctly or holding you hand in the right position. Not to mention the strumming pattern, how to tune the guitar or any of the other important tasks. The third option is to purchase an interactive guitar learning system that will show you all of the necessary techniques and guide you through as you learn the guitar. This option is the most cost effective and will get you playing the guitar in no time.

Now there are many guitar learning systems [http://guitarlessonsandmore.com/] out there today and only a few are actually worth you time and money. You need to be careful when purchasing these systems as they will be the foundation to the rest of your guitar-playing career. If the basics are not understood and applied well in the beginning, the continuing road will be difficult.
